How much is the entrance fee to Wat Phnom?

Entering the temple grounds is free of charge; donations for incense, flowers or oil lamps are welcome but voluntary. A small upkeep fee (around 500–1,000 riel) may be asked at some public toilets, so keep a little cash.

What are the opening hours?

The site is generally open daily from about 07:00 to 19:00. Arrive before 09:00 or after 16:00 for softer light and fewer crowds; during Khmer New Year and Pchum Ben it is far busier.

How high is the hill and how many steps are there?

The hill rises roughly 27 m above the surrounding streets — the main stairway on the east side is the traditional way up. A paved service road on the east offers a much gentler climb if you prefer fewer steps.

How do I get there from the Royal Palace or the riverside?

It is about 1.5–2 km north of the Royal Palace and the riverside promenade: roughly 20–25 minutes on foot, or 5–10 minutes by tuk-tuk. The temple sits at the Norodom Boulevard and Street 96 roundabout.

Where does the name Daun Penh come from?

According to local tradition, in 1372 a wealthy widow named Penh found four Buddha statues inside a koki tree floating on the Mekong. A hill was raised to enshrine them, giving the temple — and the district — the name Daun Penh, 'Hill of Lady Penh'.

What should I wear, and can I take photos?

Cover shoulders and knees and remove shoes and hats before entering the vihear. Photography of the buildings and statues is fine, but ask before photographing people praying, and never point your feet towards a Buddha image.
